The 2009 Best In Show Trophy was awarded to "Ch Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee," a.k.a. "Stump," a Sussex Spaniel

Just in case there were any doubts that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks….oh yes you can! And to prove my point, I extend a hefty congratulations to this years Best in Show Winner at Westminster, Stump. I must admit that my family and I are quite addicted to watching dog shows on television. We all packed around our TV to watch the excitement of Westminster unfold. We always root for the Newfoundlands and this years contestant was a very handsome male. If you would like to see the Newfoundland Best of Breed contest, you can watch the video on Westminster’s site. But the real hooting and barking were saved for the last five minutes of the show. How fabulous when Stump the Sussex Spaniel was chosen the winner. What makes Stump so remarkable is that he is 10 years old. He left the show ring in 2004 and almost died from a myterious illness.  Thanks to the work of the vets at Texas A&M, Stump pulled through. But he didn’t go back to the show ring, he went home to be a normal dog. He’s been your average Sussex Spaniel until this week when he entered Westminster. Now, he’s the oldest dog ever to win Best in Show at Westminster. So here’s a hefty Newfie bark to Stump!

Holly The Newf and Royal Bread Thieves

Holly The Newf and Royal - Bread Thieves Busted

Well now I’ve really done it! It was bad enough when Kim’s sister, Jenn, and her three Australian Shepherds came for Thanksgiving and I gave them all fleas. I thought I’d never live that one down. (Even though it was really the cat’s fault!) Then at Christmas when Jenn and the dogs were here again, I was telling my good buddy Royal the Aussie how delicious loaves of bread are. I told him that every once in a while, someone in my family will leave a loaf of bread on the kitchen counter. Being a big dog really has its advantages when it comes to stealing tasty snacks. When no one is looking, I swipe those loaves of bread. I especially like the fancy artisan breads that Jim pays $5 a loaf for. They’re the best! I never leave any crumbs, but I do leave the bag on the floor. Who wants to eat yucky old plastic? I was reading Royal’s blog today and now there is a bread thief in Jenn’s house. Yikes! If Jenn finds out that I’m the one that clued Royal in on how to scarf a loaf of bread when Eric wasn’t looking…I’ll never be invited to their house again. Heck, they won’t even let me over for a play date with Royal. Royal better be on his best behavior. I’m going to have to have a little bark and chat session with him about how to be a bit more inconspicuous.

holly_the_bear_halloween_2008My family took me to my first Halloween party today. It was a “Trick-or-Trunk” event at First Presbyterian Church. Everyone decorated the trunks of their cars or vans and handed out candy to the kids. I pretended I was a bear and my family decorated our van to look like a cage. My kids made “Pet the Bear if you Dare” signs. Kim put me in a down position and fed me treats while people came to visit with me. Many were amazed that I would sit so still. They don’t know how good my treats are! Kim told me I was a very good dog. I liked having all the kids pet me. I hope we can do this again next Halloween.

holly_guinea_pigs_092008I have two pet guinea pigs that I love to talk to and visit with. Momma Mia and Fudge are my really good friends. I sit by their cage each day and they squeak at me. Sometimes I bark at them, but they don’t seem to mind me. I love to watch them eat their lettuce and carrots. Kim moved their cage this week so they would be on my level. It gives me something to do while the kids are doing their home school work. It’s much better to talk to my guinea pigs than to sit outside in the yard by myself.

We went to visit Kim’s sister Jenn today and her dogs Royal, Bernie, and Big Sandy. They are all my very good friends. Royal was in his very first dog show today so we went to watch. Royal is an Australian Shepherd. Jenn had taken him to the groomer and he looked very handsome for the show. He did very well and won a ribbon. When we got home he was telling me about his blog, “The Life of Royal”. I had never heard of such a thing so he explained it to me. I thought it sounded very interesting, so I decided I would give it a try too. Royal says many people read his blog to learn more about puppies, dog training (his human Jenn is a professional dog trainer at Blue Dog K9), and what he’s up to. He said people might be interested in how a Newfoundland learns to swim, or cart, or do therapy work. So in answer to the question can dogs blog….why yes they can.
